A field app operators use because it solves the next decision — not because it looks busy.

Context

Altitude Freight’s previous mobile app tried to show everything. Drivers ignored it. Dispatch trusted radio and spreadsheets more than the product. Exceptions arrived late because the system optimized for visibility theater instead of action.

The company needed a mobile surface that operators would open because it reduced friction in the next decision — status updates, delays, handoffs and clear ownership.

The challenge

Field conditions are unforgiving. Connectivity drops. Attention is scarce. If the primary action is buried under dashboards, the product loses to muscle memory and workarounds.

We scoped the product around exceptions and status truth shared with dispatch — not around a feature list that looked complete on a roadmap slide.

How we worked the problem

    Design for exceptions

    We prioritized the moments that break a day — delays, handoffs, missing status — over dashboards that look impressive in demos.

    One truth for desk and field

    Drivers and dispatch needed the same status model so escalation did not start with arguing about what was true.

    Respect field conditions

    Offline-tolerant flows, role-specific views and clear primary actions kept the product usable outside perfect connectivity.

    Ship the operating loop

    Training, exception playbooks and release feedback from operators were part of delivery — not a post-launch wishlist.

Approach

Discovery happened in the field and at the desk. We mapped where status diverged, how handoffs failed and which alerts were noise versus signal.

The interface was designed around a small set of high-frequency actions. Role-specific views kept drivers and dispatchers in different contexts without fracturing the underlying status model.

Offline tolerance and clear recovery states were non-negotiable. An app that only works on perfect networks is not an operations product.

Altitude received a mobile product centered on status, exceptions and handoff — plus the playbooks that make adoption real.

Dispatch and field operators share one status model. Escalations carry context. The product earns usage by shortening the time between problem and next action.
